This translation from Hebrew of the first twenty-seven psalms was started in 1979 and completed in 2000, after a long interruption. I tried to capture the poetry and brevity to preserve the spirit of the originals. A special effort was made to study each line in the context of neighboring lines as well as in the context of the psalm in its entirety. In the original Hebrew there is often a poetic word order which I strived to maintain. I also attempted to keep a roughly equivalent number of syllables. A few cases of ambiguity were retained. Some verses are not easy reading, also true in the original Hebrew. The books I mainly used were the Soncino psalms, Alcalay's dictionary, Braude's Midrash (2 volumes), Weingreen's grammar, the Moody Old Testament parsing text (reference from Rabbi Marc Sirinsky), and the very spiritual and thorough ArtScroll Tehillim, from which I occasionally used a word or phrase. I also consulted Hirsch's book on the psalms and the multi-commentary of Ashkol Press, Jerusalem. Ruth Wire's writing group made comments on the English which added clarity. King David was a dazzlingly brilliant person. It seems to me he coined words. This is shown from commentary where a word he used appeared nowhere else. Also, in 1 Chron. 29:10 where he is said to have stated 'from eternity to eternity' he foreshadowed the modern extended real numbers.
