The prediction on the rear cover of this book that it was "Destined to become the definitive record of this theatre of the war." holds as good today as when the book was first published in 1992. In his preface the author wrote that he originally intended the book as a record of United States Naval ships that visited New Zealand ports during, WW2, but it grew to cover all US units that came to NZ. The contents page demonstrates the scope of Bevan's book, beginning with the arrival of the first ship in January 1942 and a survey of events leading up to the Pacific conflict. Then follows details of the US infantry and Marine divisions stationed here for training before heading north to the front-lines, camps where thay were based and their deployments in the Pacific. Support for the troops in NZ included HQ establishmernts, hospitals and mobile operating units and naval command organisations. Other organisations or services included a joint purchasing board, boat-building and ship repairs, rest and rehabilitation facilities, public relations and censorship. Social isssues arising are also studied as are accidents, incidents and war-brides. The legendry "Battle of Manners Street" in Wellington is subject to the author's account, in which he endeavours to separate fact and fiction. Issues involving discipline, crime and community relations are discussed objectively as are political and economic factors. Ship movements, which brought supplies, equipment and weapons for NZ use as well as for the US services, are well recorded in this history, which has been, and will continue to be, an invaluable reference resource for WWII historians and any person interested in this " Yankee invasion."
