Schlagwörter: Kunst Malerei Wildlife Artwork Illustration Artbook Bildband painting art Zustand: 0,8 cm Riss im original Schutzumschlag, ansonsten einwandfrei. Klappentext: "A painting of polar wilderness by Keith Shackleton will always stand out in an exhibition of wildlife art. His pictures are big, evocative of a frequently hostile environment, and strikingly beautiful. Very few artists, and probably none that approaches Shackle-ton's ability, have had the good fortune to travel so far north and south, so often äs he. This was made possible when he joined the adventure ship Lindblad Explorer äs a naturalist and remained with her for fifteen years. Painting, according to Keith, should be fun. He is not at all concerned with "the importance of suffering to the creative mind". To put it all down to letting off steam, kicking an empty can along the street or just plain exhibitionism would, for him, be infinitely closer to the truth - and he tweaks the bells of a few artistic "sacred cows" in saying so. The book opens with a fascinating and very personal discussion about painting. This lays the foundation for füll apprecia-tion of the pictures themselves and of the artistic observations that are made in some of the accompany-ing texts. These observations, lucid and thought-provoking, are offered with the same light touch äs the anecdotal passages. Shackleton's writing is as compelling äs his art and is frequently very funny. Whether he is changing eider ducks, one after another, into more colourful drakes in a fit of shameless existentialist abandonment (half the eider drakes on the back cover started out life äs ladies); glissading down loose cinders from the summit of an Antarctic volcano whilst standing with arms outstretched like an impassioned evangelist; accepting a small pebble äs a token of affection from an amorous penguin; or thoughtfully rinsing his brush out in the remedial whisky and soda - at the end of a day in which nothing seems to have gone äs it should, he gives the reader füll value for money with his story telling. In common with other wildlife painters he observes and studies what the layman might see, but not really take in. Wildlife artists have an uncanny ability to describe nature because they have to study it so closely in order to succeed in their representations of it. If the painter is a born raconteur and has spent years in the polar regions, a truly memorable account may be expected. This is it. Keith Hope Shackleton, painter, naturalist, explorer, broadcaster, and author, is one of Britains best known living wildlife artists, Fast President of both The Royal Society of Marine Artists and The Society of Wildlife Artists, and current Chairman of The Artists League of Great Britain. Though only distantly related to the Shackleton of Antarctic fame, he has shared the same passions. He has travelled and painted all his life, äs a pilot, äs a dinghy enthusiast, and latterly for many years äs naturalist on Explorer. He has written magnificent collection of wildlife photographs, re-cording the ocean voyages of this vessel, entitled Ship in the Wilderness, to be published by J M Dent and Sons Ltd simultaneously with this book of his oil paintings. His long association with Shell UK Ltd, the Sponsors of Wildlife and Wilderness: an Artists's World, includes three natural history calendars, limited edition prints of paintings, and illustrations for their 1960's "Shilling" guides. He has recently been honoured with the prestigious Master Wildlife Artist award, for 1986, by The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in the United States of America."
