From the preface: "The two compilers have carried out over a number of years an extensive search for catalogues of coin auctions in the British Isles from the earliest times down to today. Among their main published sources were F. Lugt's Répertoire, published in three volumes between 1938 and 1964, listing sales down to 1900; and the great Auction Catalogue of the American Numismatic Society published in 1962 with Supplement published in 1967. The Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum, the British Library and the libraries of the two Numismatic Societies were also a fruitful source and the Compilers have done a considerable service in bringing all this material, so far as it concerned the British Isles, together. An even greater service has been tracing provincial auctions, some of them of considerable importance, and in identifying a number of sellers who allowed themselves to be disguised in their sale catalogues as "a Gentleman abandoning the pursuit" or "A Nobleman" Fine.
