Dr Tomasz Piesakowski was born in Poland in 1922. Since the 1830 Rising his family had for generations fought for a free and independent Poland. When Hitler and Stalin attacked Poland in September 1939 Piesakowski took part in the tragic September Campaign. He was arrested by the NKVD while trying to join General Sikorski's forces in France, and sentenced to five years of hard labour in the Soviet Arctic. He endured imprisonment in various parts of the Soviet Union. ln the labour camp he was accused of sabotage but miraculously escaped being sentenced to death. Hitler's attack on Russia in 1941 led to the formation of a Polish Army there, recruited mainly from former Polish labour camp prisoners. HQ was in the far south of the Soviet Union. Piesakowski managed to join up and eventually served as an officer in the 2nd Polish Corps in ltaly. He was twice awarded the Cross of Valour for his bravery in the successful Polish assault on Monte Cassino and at Bologna. Wounded in action, he reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. After the war Piesakowski settled in the UK, compteted his studies and worked as Art Director of several British companies. A specialist in contemporary military history, he lectures at the Polish University in Exile. He is tirelessly engaged in furthering the cause of Polish independence. "Poles in the Soviet Union" was Iisted as a bestseller by the most influential Polish newspaper in the United States in 1988.
