Sutton Courtenay Press, Cambridge, revised and expanded edition, 1986. Plain cloth, genealogical tables on endpapers, 8vo,. xxii, [2], 342, [18] pp, ills, facs. Uncommon. From the preface: "The main body of the Revised Edition follows {the 1954 first edition], keeping the original pagination, but incorporating corrections and additions made necessary by the progress of research, my own, and still more that of other people. These relate among other things to Estienne's part in the design and use of type, and in the genesis of the royal Greek types, to the identity of his workmen and apprentices, to the logistics of the move to Geneva and the effects of the move on the careers of his sons, to the extent of his business in France and abroad. An entirely fresh section has .. been added at the end, under the title 'New aspects of Robert Estienne 1954 – 85'. This refers chiefly to the traditions inherited by Estienne from his father Henry (I) Estienne, principal printer and publisher to Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and his circle; to Estienne's own education; to his commercial success; to the identity and significance of certain enemies and friends of his; to the fate of his library and to certain surviving books from it which have recently come to light; to an authentic account of a conversation with him in Geneva which has hitherto been overlooked; to the interplay of research, religion and typographical resourcefulness in his Bible publishing; to his increasing promotion of the study and status of the French language; and to the adaptation of his policies and pursuits to the changed conditions in which he worked at Geneva. The Revised Edition provides an English translation, the first to be published, of the narrative contained in Estienne's Reply to the Theologians of Paris. .. This time it has been decided to append, as well, a complete translation of Estienne's narrative, followed by a summary of the censures and notes on the main dramatis personae appearing in the narrative.. Apart from the Reply to the Theologians of Paris, Robert Estienne's only original published utterances were the prefaces to his learned works. A list of the most important of these, with the incipit of each, is supplied. Note at head of front pastedown endpaper indicating this is a review copy, upper edges slightly bumped, seemingly lacking the original paper spine-label but with a pristine "spare" label tipped-in at the end, otherwise Very Good.
