Robinson : English Theatrical Literature, 1559- 1900, published by the Society for Theatre Research in 1970. It is therefore similar in format and in classification, and, like its parent, is restricted to separately published books and pamphlets. Its scope is, however, broader than that of its predecessor. It includes theses, and books published outside Great Britain whether written in English or in other languages. It also places considerably more emphasis on drama if this may, for convenience of classification, be considered apart from theatre. . 'Theatre' is thought of in this context as covering those performing arts dependent on a text, either spoken or sung on stage by living persons. This excludes dance, mime and puppetry, but covers dramatic theatre and opera. Music hall singers and comedians are included, but not 'speciality' acts. 'British' covers both Northern and Southern Ireland, and titles in British languages other than English are included, as are the activities of British theatrical companies acting abroad in English."
