This biography, on the author's great uncle William Laird Whitby, is based mainly on records and recollections left by the old seafarer, born 1838, died 1922. His life at sea began when he was 15, aboard a troopship, later while serving on a barque taking supplies to Crimea he was witness to the Charge of the Light Brigade and some other actions. On a subsquent voyage to NZ he was attracted to the country and in 1859 sailed from London determined to settle in the colony. Lyttleton was his choice of a new home port. From here he was to return to sea, mostly on the NZ coast, eventualy becoming a master mariner. His writings provide a fascinating look at life at sea in the mid to late 1800s, but it is also an interesting account of early settlement in NZ. This copy signed by the author on the title page. 79 pages, numerous b/w photos/document reproductions, sepia photograph e/papers of Captain Whitby and his wife Lizzie. Cream hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block excellent. Pictorial DJ is VG with trifle wear spine extremities, one short tear, light creasing top edges.
