On the foot of a UN mandate Ireland was asked to contribute to a peacekeeping force in the Congo. Over 3000 soldiers volunteered . out of which 689 men were selected for form the 32nd Infantry Battalion. This was the first battalion of Irish soldiers to serve outside of Ireland since the foundation of the state. Within weeks they were joined by the 33rd Infantry Battalion, with a further 711 soldiers on board. The author, Archie Raeside, was an airman at Baldonnel and became the first member of the Air Corps to serve in the Congo as the Army's official photographer. This is an excellent photographic record of this first mission.
