This, the third volume in the survey of the least well understood areas of English wetlands is so welcome. The Humber Wetlands Project has been the fourth major wetland archaeological project funded by English Heritage and its predecessor since 1973. Together they constitute a wetland archaeological archive that is hard to match anywhere in the world, and which is a tribute to its guiding light throughout, Professor John Coles. Moreover, this particular project has a value that goes beyond the management of the Humber wetlands alone. The UK currently leads the world in the management of archaeological wetlands, and in the science behind organic preservation within them. That in large part has been due to the foresight shown by English Heritage in its funding strategy for scientific research. The Humber Wetlands series stands as an exemplar of how wetland scientific survey should proceed and be published. An important theme in all the volumes is a careful integration of archaeological and environmental methods to understand natural and cultural heritage together. The two are too closely intertwined for a separate treatment to be attempted. This volume illustrates a further integration between ground-based and aerial survey to optimise the knowledge acquired in a cost-effective manner. Last but not least, all three volumes have been exemplary in the speed with which this very detailed survey work has reached publication. We look forward to the remaining volumes in a series that is making a lasting contribution to both the understanding and care of our natural and cultural heritage in the Humber wetlands and beyond. .
