You can exercise it or neglect it; you can direct it this way or that; you can improve it by use, you can lose it by neglect. The fact is that we all possess a certain store of voluntary energy which is above all things under our own control; and it is this voluntary use of our inner forces which we are studying just now. We are at any rate equal in this, that we are all possessed of a certain amount of will-power; that we can make a full or a negative use of it; and that it depends on ourselves what we shall do with it, and whether we make the best or the worst of it. Our question is not how much energy we naturally possess, but what do we do with so much of it as we have? When we put the matter thus, we at once recognise that gift, or heredity, does not sum up the case. Our whole system of moral and religious training is based on the assumption that every child in the home, every scholar in the class, can do something, and be something, more than he actually is by nature; that there are latent forces capable of being roused into activity; and that in the last resort it is only the child himself that can determine how much he will learn, and what kind of man he will be. The very word education suggests the act of drawing out or educing, the possibilities of knowledge, industry, character, in the pupil; and when we have equipped a child with all the externalities of training, it still remains with himself how far he will rise to his noblest possibilities as a man, and use his resources to the best advantage for himself and others.
