This study of architecture and landscape begins with four large spaces. Professor Creese clearly demonstrates how designers of unusual sensitivity-such as Thomas Jefferson, A. J. Downing, and F. L. Olmsted- developed Charlottesville, the Hudson and Yosemite Valleys, and Mount Hood National Forest to fulfill public emotional and intellectual expectations at succeeding moments in American history. The second section of the book reveals four "hidden," smaller places as solutions to mundane or sordid challenges. The Boston Fens, a facsimile coastal marsh, mitigated water pollution; Graceland, Chicago's landscaped cemetery, relieved problems of burials in valuable commercial land; and the esthetic enclosure of Riverside suburb countered the hard-edged cruelties of Chicago. Finally came Wright's Taliesin Valley in Wisconsin- a complete and contained design of a rustic area to relieve an artistic and educated family's cultural anxieties.
