She was called Zarafa and, on Tuesday 31 October 1826, she came to shore just outside the bustling port of Marseilles.Zarafa was the first living giraffe, Europe had seen in almost 350 years and the first of her kind over to arrive in France. A gentle creature, she was presented to Charles X by the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt in the hope that this gift would forestall European intervention in his war against the Greeks.In France Zarafa brought about an eruption of interest - among ordinary people and many of the premier savants of the time such as Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Helaire - that still resonates there today. All around the country the 'Child of the Tropics' became an adored celebrity and, in Paris the inspiration for the eccentric fashion à la Girafe.Zarafa linked a primitive Africa with post-Napoleonic France and has come to symbolise an age fascinated by progress and the unfamiliar.
