Lucy (nee Lucille Ryan) Lawless, who at age 21 was crowned the 1989 Mrs. New Zealand, was offered the role of the man-hating Amazon Lysia in the 1994 made-for-TV movie "Hercules and the Amazon Women," which became the pilot for the TV series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." Vanessa Angel was originally cast in the role of the villainous warrior woman Xena in the March, 1995 Hercules episode "The Warrior Princess," but fell ill and was unable to travel to New Zealand for filming. So Lawless' ash-blonde hair was dyed black to keep Xena from looking too much like Lysia, she played in three Spring episodes during which she was revealed to be not so villainous after all, and on Sept. 4, 1995, the spin-off series "Xena: Warrior Princess" debuted -- to endure for six years and 134 outings. On whether the relationship of Xena and sidekick Gabrielle involves the love that dare not speak its name, we take no position. Reduced from $30. Books.
