Victoria Australia: Regimental Trustees, 1990. 850 pages, b/w photos, maps, endnotes, index. Hooves, Wheels & Tracks is a history of the 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment and its many predecessors. It traces, across some 130 years, much of the activity and the events that shaped the destiny of the Regiment.Whilst official records and reports provide the backdrop against which the story is set, it is the diaries, letters and recollections of the men, and recently the women, of the unit that add colour, vibrancy and above all, realism, to the tapestry of events. The account begins amidst the uncertain origins of the many units dotted about colonial Victoria in the 1850s. Next it joins Colonel Tom Price as he oversees the raising and development of the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Then it sails across the Indian Ocean to experience the early excitement and later disillusionment of the Boer War. After Federation comes the Great War, and with it the genesis of perhaps the finest unit of the AIF, the 4th Light Horse Regiment. That unique fraternity is followed through the vicissitudes of Gallipoli and itssubsequent division into the nuclei of two units that each carried the name of the Regiment; one to the horror of the Western Front, the other to glory across the Sinai and Palestine. The post-war Militia is observed as it wends an ever declining way through parsimonious times that provide the setting for a hurried leap onto a wartime footing. Then there emerge those estimable units '4th, 17th and 101st Motor Regiments, 19th Machine Gun Battalion and 4th Armoured Regiment, as well as, later, 2/4th Armoured Regiment.Following a dusty and often frustrating period of years on the mainland, the story moves to New Guinea, joining the 2/4th at Aitape as 'C' Squadron begins itsdiscouraging push down to Wewak. Across the Solomon Sea the remainder of the Regiment is more active, and effective, as it provides substantial support for the Australian forces on Bougainville, completing the work begun by the Americans in 1943.Finally, the birth of the present day Regiment is scrutinized as it matures into a sustained, viable unit of the Army Reserve, ready to serve into the future. A heavy book, in very good condition except for a small bump to the top front corner.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
