Dr Godman has provided texts and translations of representative compositions by thirty Latin versifiers of the Carolingian age and its aftermath. The texts are preceded by a perceptive introduction which tidily offers in chronological sequence a literary commentary of the selected poems. The introductory essay, eighty pages long is the major achievement of the book, together with the judicious selection of the passages. About the texts and translations some reservations must be voiced. (.) G.'s technique of colometric, line-by-line translation is attractive and effective (.). One feels, however, that the volume has been too hastily compiled, and would certainly have benefited from sustained scrutinity by a second pair of eyes before publication (.) but it is important to remember that a large body of difficult poetry is here being rendered in English for the first time.
