From the preface: "For some time now a new series of catalogues devoted to the British Library's holdings of seventeenth-century books from various linguistic-geographical areas has been appearing, in succession to the well-known short-title catalogues of books printed before 1601 in the British Museum/British Library. The present volume of books from the Low Countries held in the British Library is one of these. The area it covers is roughly the same as that of its predecessor, the Short-title catalogue of books printed in the Netherlands and Belgium and of Dutch and Flemish books printed in other countries from 1470 to 1600 now in the British Museum of 1965, but its timespan is very much shorter, embracing no more than the years from 1601 to 1621. The reason for this limitation is very simple: the compiler undertook her task as she was approaching retirement and thought it prudent not to attempt a catalogue of Dutch books throughout the seventeenth Century. The resulting volume is nevertheless much more substantial than its fifteenth and sixteenth-century forerunner. This is due not only to the greater output of Dutch presses as time went on, but also to the compiler's different views of the scope and purpose of this catalogue which should bring the Library's holdings in these varied and interesting books to the notice of the scholarly public in a way that is informative and, perhaps, challenging.
