New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1973. 330 Pages. Dust Jacket has red background, gold and black lettering with illustration of Hong Kong silver dollar on front and unclipped price $6.95. Praise from Publisher's Weekly on back. A novel based on real events. In 1962 the Au family was smuggled into Hong Kong by sympathetic farm workeers. They came to find a better future. Instead they faced the indifference of a great city already crowded with other Mainland refugees, with unemployed, with poor, with beggars. Au and his wife had even less chance than most, for their only child, their son Po, ws blind. A quiet helples boy. But a boy willing to anything to earn the right to be treated as a human being, a member of the family. He becomes the beggar of the book's title. this is a story of survival, of the small victories that keep a person alive, and the routine humiliations that break the spirit. It illuminateds the misunderstandings between Orientals and Westerneers, and the harm done by the vesitges of colonialsim -- to the Westerner as much as to the Oriental. It is a story based on real events. it has been many lyears since Western readers have been offered a novel that takes them into the dialy life of Chinese society. The author worked in a shcool for the blind to learn more about boys like Po. Journalism can tell a reader much about the externals of Chinese life, but it is the special aim of fiction to give insight into the thoughts, hopes, and anxieties of others --- to bring to life another point of view. This was the author's first novel.. First Printing. Hard Back. As New/Very Good. Illus. by Fishbein, Golda - Dust Jacket Design. 5 1/2" X 8".
