Popular for its highly rhetorical style and of historical interest as an account of the Civil War, his epic became a pagan schooltext. Witness to this are the sets of ancient commentary that go by the names of the Commenta Bernensia and the Adnotationes super Lucanum. While I argue later (in Appendix II) that these may not represent two independent bodies of ancient scholia, their very presence speaks unmistakably for the interest scholars in the fifth and sixth centuries had in Lucan.
