The conflict between Israelis and Palestines cannot be resolved unless there is some agreement about its origins. This book traces the history of the Palestinians from the Ottoman Empire to the present and argues that anti-Zionism fused the Palestinians into a nation, and nationality and hostility have long been inextricably linked. The book traces the fortunes of the people of Palestine during the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the trauma of World War I, the transfer to British authority, the growth in Jewish immigration and finally the creation of the Jewish National State. It was in response to these violent upheavals and threats that the Palestinians, once a disparate group of peasant farmers began to develop a strong national consciousness. That consciousness was born out of anti-Zionism and thus made acceptance of the Jewish presence a denial of Palestinian nationhood. However, the authors sense that a new generation of Palestinian leader may be more willing to come to terms with Israel. Hardcover, Label: The Free Press, The Free Press, Produktgruppe: Book, Publiziert: 1993-01-11, Studio: The Free Press, Verkaufsrang: 2345080.

Baruch Kimmerling, Joel S. Migdal, Books, History, The Palestinian People: A History, In a timely reminder of how the past informs the present, Baruch Kimmerling and Joel Migdal offer an authoritative account of the history of the Palestinian people from their modern origins to the Oslo peace process and beyond.Palestinians struggled to create themselves as a people from the first revolt of the Arabs in Palestine in 1834 through the British Mandate to the impact of Zionism and the founding of Israel. Their relationship with the Jewish people and the State of Israel has been fundamental in shaping that identity, and today Palestinians find themselves again at a critical juncture. In the 1990s cornerstones for peace were laid for eventual Palestinian-Israeli coexistence, including mutual acceptance, the renunciation of violence as a permanent strategy, and the establishment for the first time of Palestinian self-government. But the dawn of the twenty-first century saw a reversion to unmitigated hatred and mutual demonization. By mid-2002 the brutal violence of the Intifada had crippled Palestine's fledgling political institutions and threatened the fragile social cohesion painstakingly constructed after 1967. Kimmerling and Migdal unravel what went right--and what went wrong--in the Oslo peace process, and what lessons we can draw about the forces that help to shape a people. The authors present a balanced, insightful, and sobering look at the realities of creating peace in the Middle East.

19th century,20th century, africa, african, earth sciences, europe, geography, history, humanities, international and world politics, Palestinians: The Making of a People, In the 100-year struggle for Palestine, history itself has been a battlefield, as Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs seek to challenge each other's claim to national identity. Whatever the outcome of the current phase in regional affairs, no real progress toward peace can occur before agreement is reached about the events that have shaped the present and will remain dominant influences over the future. Baruch Kimmerling and Joel Migdal have moved in this direction with this account of the origins and history of the Palestinian people.
