A short biographical pamphlet on John McCrae and the effects his poetry has had on Canada. McCrae was born in Guelf in 1872 He studied arts at the University of Toronto, serving with the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada militia unit. During a brief medical leave from college, he trained as an artilleryman at the Royal Military College, before returning to complete his B.A. He published his first poems in 1894 while attending medical school. He served with the Canadian Contingent during the Second Boer War. Upon his return from South Africa he took up residency at the Montreal General Hospital, filling several medical positions and teaching pathology at McGill University until the outbreak of the First World War. McCrae was appointed as a field surgeon with the 1st Brigade of Canadian Artillery in 1914. He was present at the fateful 2nd Battle of Ypres, where he wrote "In Flanders Fields". It was first published in Punch Magazine on December 8th, 1915, and propelled him to international fame. He continued writing poetry and practicing field-medicine until 1918, when he fell ill with pneumonia. He died the 28th of January and was buried the following day in the Wimereux Cemetery of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Sir Arthur Currie was in attendance at his funeral.
