Stanthorpe, Qld: Published by the author, 2009. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. xv + 354 pages, b/w historical photographs, maps, bibliography, index. This is a captivating glimpse into the lives of people who left Italy's shores eager to build a better life for their families in a new country. Their stories speak of courage, hardships, love, perseverance, accomplishment and ultimately triumph. The Italian contribution to the social, economic and cultural development of Queensland's Granite Belt has been considerable. The book is divided into three sections. The first section provides a short historical overview of the Italian presence since the 1870'S. It chronicles the arrival of the first wave of settlers after 1925, the internment of local Italians and the use of Italian POW labour during WWII. It concludes with a brief survey of significant events up to 2007. The second section, which makes up the book's largest portion, is a collection of 131 short personal histories, contributed by Italian families still resident on the Granite Belt around the township of Stanthorpe. The third section includes brief accounts of the recreational, social, cultural and educational institutions that arose as a result of the Italian settlement in this area.
