INSCRIBED on title page: "To Joseph H., / With best wishes for / Christmas, 2006 from / Susanne Latarski, and / from the author, / Paz Domeyko." "Brilliant scholar, member of the Philomat movement, passionate patriot and revolutionary fighter, daring explorer, outstanding educator, committed Christian, Ignacy Domeyko was a truly multi-dimensional figure. Forced to flee his birthplace of Lithuania, after taking part in the 1831 insurrection against the Russian invaders, Domeyko spent several years in Paris, where he deepened his already close friendship with Adam Mickiewicz, Poland's greatest poet. In 1838 he accepted a position as science teacher in the new Republic of Chile. To assume his new post he faced the dangers of a long ocean voyage, a ride across the Argentine Pampa and a perilous winter crossing of the Andes Mountains. As well as teaching young men of northern Chile about mines and minerals, he undertook a systematic exploration of the country, traversing it from north to south, discovering valuable mineral deposits, His success as arbiter in mining disputes earned him the title of 'incorruptible.' Domeyko is considered the father of the Chilean educational system, in particular of the University of Chile, still operating under rules he established. Despite his adventurous life, Ignacy suffered from never-ending homesickness and nostalgia for the beloved country of his birth. Unable to return because of its continued occupation, in middle age he finally decided to make Chile his home, and met the beautiful Enriqueta. It was only as an old man, after 46 years in his adopted country, that Ignacy was able to return to Europe, where his discoveries and successes won him wide acclaim. Today he is still remembered in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, France and Chile as one of the greatest scientists, explorers and educators of the nineteenth century. bEcause of his exemplary life, in 2002 the Chilean Catholic Church presented to the Vatican the cause for I. Domeyko's beatification, the first step on the road to sainthood. His great-granddaughter, Paz Domeyko, has used his diaries and remarkable letters to write this fascinating story of her ancestor's life and adventures." Illustrated. 426 pages. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. Paper wrappers.
