Kilsyth Victoria Australia: Shirley Jones, 2004. 194 pages b/w photos - This book tells the story of living in rural south-western Victoria, not from railway employee perspective, but a child growing up in a railway family in 1920s and '30s. The author, Shirley Jones, was born in 1926. Her father, Frank Bawdon, was an operating porter on the Victorian Railways and her mother, Rene Johnson, a New Zealand immigrant. Shirley covers the period 1928-1936, when her father was the operating porter on the Forrest line in the Otways. During this period the family lived in departmental residences at Armytage and Birregurra. Her father worked for the VR from 1917 until retirement in 1963. He especially enjoyed working at remote locations and when the opportunity arose to work the Birregurra-Forrest branch, he applied for and was appointed as operating porter. The author describes living in an isolated house at Armytage station. Her mother was appointed mistress in charge of this wayside stop, an arrangement that provided the family with a rent-free house. Conditions were very primitive; no power, no plumbing. This required a huge adjustment for her mother, accustomed to living in the cities of Wellington and Melbourne. They lived at Armytage for four years, during that time, planted flower and vegetable gardens and cypress trees for wind protection. In 1932, the family moved to Birregurra, closer to Frank's work. They lived in a small community of departmental residences, and now had access to all the town services; shops, church and schools, previously unavailable. In 1936, Frank was transferred to Mitcham station in eastern Melbourne. The author vividly describes the hardship that families faced when working and living in such remote and primitive conditions. She describes how they overcame problems with isolation, separation from family and how they made do with what they had. She also describes the aspects of life that they considered advantageous, such as their first motor car, visits to the beach at Lorne and travelling on holiday to Melbourne, Sydney and Ballarat with their free rail pass. Shirley tells the stories of her parents' families. Her father came from a large supportive family from Ballarat and her mother, Rene, from an impoverished upbringing in Melbourne, as she was the eldest of six children when Rene's mother was abandoned by their father soon after arriving in Australia. It also includes many historical references of the Otway and upper Barwon regions, the history of the Forrest branch, the timber industry and the indigenous history. It contains many historical rail photos as well as family photos.. First Edition. Soft Cover. New/No Jacket.
