Formed in 1915 in Armidale, the 1st 33rd Battalion was comprised of spirited young country men from the New England District of NSW - brothers, cousins, old school fellows and close neighbours. from tentative and sometimes rebellious beginnings there emerged a renowned and smoothly operating fighting unit.

The book hopes to portray the 33rd Battalion's role in the conflict for what it was, an epic battle, with heroism, by ordinary young Australians against impossible odds and indescribable horrors. The late Richard H. Bloomfield M. C. an officer of the First 33rd, attempted to record the Battalion's history back in 1939, but his health was failing, so the report was never completed. He did however publish a brief history, serialised in Tamworth's The Northern Daily Leader in 1939 under the heading “Green and Black”. This book attempts to complete the task he started over fifty years ago. The work was also inspired by the last surviving member, Mr. Cyril Herborn of Grafton. The book has personal profiles, photos and an index.
