Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 1997. Book. Very Good. Original Cloth. Canberra : Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 1997. Description xxx, 506 p., [13] p. of plates ; 24 cm. ISBN 0644397640 Series Documents on Australian foreign policy Notes Includes indexes and bibliographical references. On 6 July 1957, in the Japanese resort town of Hakone, Australia's Minister for Trade, John McEwen, the Australian Ambassador to Japan, Sir Alan Watt, and Japan's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Nobusuke Kishi, signed An Agreement on Commerce between Australia and Japan. The Commerce Agreement set in motion Australia's most successful bilateral trade relationship in history. At the time, some members of the Australian Parliament and sections of Australian industry were unsure about the proposed agreement, coming not long after the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951 and amidst fear that a flood of Japanese manufactured imports would follow Japan's accession to the GATT in 1955, but McEwen's vision of the long-term economic importance of Japan to Australia prevailed. The Australia-Japan Commerce Agreement provided most-favoured nation treatment in tariffs and assurances of non-discriminatory treatment in import and exchange controls.
