"Masterpieces from the Hermitage" is the catalog of the touring exhibition of Old Master and Impressionist paintings and drawings organized by the Hermitage and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia. The exhibit ran in Sydney from March 10 to May 1, 1988 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and then in Melbourne at the National Gallery of Victoria from May 13 to July 3, 1988. The exhibition had a single theme: The Human Figure in Art. The exhibition consisted of 30 paintings and 30 drawings by well known masters. Among them are works by painters of the Italian Renaissance, an age in which new, truly humanistic conception of art emerged. Works by Bordone, Boticelli, Francia, Pontormo, Palma il Vecchio, Lotto and Correggio illustrate the period. The glorious flowering of painting in the 17th century and the diversity of styles of the masters belonging to leading European schools are represented in the works of Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin, Lorrain, Hals, Velazquez and Ribera. In the 18th century national distinctions disappear to a large extent, and the works of Lancret, greuze and Reynolds, while all highly individual, are noted for the obvious similarity in their styles. The celebrated Hermitage collection of French paintings of the late 19th to early 20th centuries may be seen in the canvases of Claude Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso. The graphic works of masters of the 15th - 18th centuries form a separate part of the exhibition and include masterpieces by Ercole de'Roberti, Durer, Pierre Dumonstier, Rubens and Rembrandt. 67 illustrations, 30 in full color. ; 120 pages .
