Milton's Language presents a thorough analysis of the syntax and lexis of all his English poetry and relates his poetic practice to some aspects of his prose style. Out of Corns' close comparison of Milton's verse with that of his contemporaries, there emerges a much clearer sense of what is distinctly Miltonic. The old question of Milton's supposed unenglishness is re-engaged within a rigorous methodology which draws upon computer-analysis of a considerable linguistic database, and from it a clearer picture appears of Milton's syntax and of its relationship to English literary tradition. Syntactic distinctions are disclosed not only between Milton and his contemporaries but also between his minor verse and his longer poems. Lexically, his earlier poetry seem heir to the stylistic imperatives of Spenser and Shakespeare, whereas his later poems break new ground for English verse both in their ingenuity and in the kinds of active discrimination which they require of their readers, yet their creative achievements are almost wholly realised through the native resources of English.The study is important both methodologically and theoretically - methodologically, because it uses some wholly new techniques for the analysis of the syntax of literature and because it is the most sustained account within a linguistic-stylistic approach to a major English poet; theoretically, because it attempts to rehabilitate stylistics after the strictures it has attracted in recent years, and because it is the first linguistic study to negotiate a position with respect to genre theory and reader-response theory.
