Preface: 'The Church and Healing' was the theme of the two gatherings of the Ecclesiastical History Society which met under the presidency of Professor Terence Ranger. All the papers included in this volume were read at the summer conference held at the University College of North Wales, Bangor in 1981 or at the following winter meeting at King's College, London. Prior to that summer conference the Society's editor, Derek Baker, resigned and I was appointed editor by the Society at that conference. During the period in which the Society was without an editor the collection of manuscripts was undertaken by the president, Professor Ranger, and I wish to record my thanks and those of the Society for his efforts at that stage. The selection of the papers for inclusion in the volume was made by myself in association with Professor Ranger who has also contributed an introduction. Generous financial assistance has once again been received from the British Academy, for which the Society wishes to express its gratitude. -W.J.
