Here she kept up the character & managed to see every place in a fortnight that was worth seeing within 100 miles". Thus wrote Lady Herschel from Feldhausen on 6 December 1836 to her cousin Mary in England. Feldhausen, the Herschels' home near Wynberg, was one of the places "worth seeing" which Lady Franklin included in her hurried but comprehensive tour of the Cape Peninsula and its neighbourhood. Her account of the visit provides a vignette of the Cape as it appeared at the beginning of the Victorian era.' .
