ABOUT THE BOOK Business and Society PREFACE It is now widely accepted that business firms have social responsibili­ties extending well beyond their economic function. This enlargement in the role of the firm, however, has complicated managerial decision-making. Whereas in earlier days managers, for the most part, had only to consider the economic consequences of their actions, today social, political, and en­vironmental repercussions must be carefully weighed in many important decision situations. Historically, colleges of business have done little to prepare prospective managers to deal with the perplexing problems of business-society rela­tionships. During the last decade or so, however, a new course - titled variously as Business and Society, The Environment of Business, Social Re­sponsibility, or something similar - has been introduced in many busi­ness programs for the express purpose of correcting this deficiency. This book is targeted for such a course. The book is an extensive revision of an earlier edition. Three complete new sections have been included - Part Two, Business and Government; Part Six, Implementing Social Programs, and Part Seven, Evaluation of So­cial Performance (social audits). Also, a subsection in Part Three on energy problems has been added. These topics represent general issue areas where both public interest and knowledge have increased significantly in recent years. The sections from the first edition on social responsibility, pollution, minority and poverty problems, and consumerism have been retained but the original text material has been extensively augmented and up-dated to provide a greater breadth of issues and make the information as current as feasibly possible. Approximately one half of the cases included are new to this edition. In our decisions to add new cases and delete old ones, we tried to keep two principal considerations in mind: (1) include issues that are of current im­portance, and (2) have a variety of issues. To the best of our judgment this has been accomplished. It is our experience that because of the imprecise nature of the business and society field, case discussions provide the most effective vehicle for generating student insight into the complexity of the issues. Therefore, the cases represent the principal pedagogical focus of the book. The text mate­rial is intended as a theoretical and informational base for tackling the cases. The overall book is designed as a self-contained teaching package, although it can be readily integrated with other texts in the field. The cases themselves are of varying lengths. The shorter ones are in­tended to illustrate important social issues and stimulate class discussion of these issues. The purpose of the longer cases is to provide detailed informa­tion on specific problems facing firms so students can analyze the situations and make pertinent policy recommendations.
