One of the problems that metallurgists and engineers frequently have to deal with is the joining of metals. Mechanical joints are of many types; some are soldered or brazed, while others are fusion or non-fusion welds. All have their own inherent advantages and disadvantages, which are rooted in both the joining processes and the properties of the metals involved. Copper has been welded since pre-Roman times, but fusion welding, in particular, has always caused considerable difficulty. However, the application of the newer welding processes, coupled with an appreciation of the metallurgical background, has resulted in greater progress being made in the welding of copper in the last 20 years than ever before. The main aim of this publication is to fulfill the need for an up-to-date reference book on welding and brazing practice specifically related to copper and its alloys. For this reason, the emphasis is placed on the effective application of the joining processes rather than on detailed discussions of the processes themselves. The major part of the book is concerned with gas-shielded arc welding and low-temperature capillary brazing, which are the most favoured methods of achieving joint quality in copper-alloy structural components, but oxyacetylene welding, metal-arc welding and bronze welding are also covered.
