Leo Cooper, London, 1985, first UK edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, FINE/FINE CONDITION ( dj price clipped), 178 pages, illus., map, index., glossary.----------------------- This delightful memoir of life in the Indian Army in the twilight of the Raj will be of great nostalgic interest to anyone who has either lived or served in India. "Bunny" Robinson-Horley was a regular Indian Army officer who rose to a position of great trust among the higher echelons of the Indian Armed Forces. After a distinguished war he became Military Assistant to General Sir Reade Godwin-Austen, the Principal Administrative Officer at GHQ New Delhi, and also served his successor Air-Marshal Sir Thomas Elmhirst for a short time. -------------------------------------------The climax of his career came though when he was appointed Comptroller to Field-Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck (The Auk) who was Commander-in-Chief India. The period of this appointment coincided with the days leading up to Indian Independence and its terrible aftermath. Colonel Robinson-Horley writes with charm and wit about life at the C-in-C's residence. He paints an affectionate portrait of his Chief and gives a fascinating description of what day-to-day life was like as the country headed inextricably towards partition and disaster.---------------------------------------------------This is not just a military memoir. Whilst the threat of violence and mayhem is ever-present the daily round and common task are never ignored. The author clearly loved India and the Indians but above all he admired and respected The Auk and this book is, among other things, an intimate portrait of a great man carrying out what he always regarded as his finest work , his command of the Indian Army. Historians will find this a valuable background hook and old India hands will devour it with relish.
