This book is concerned with the comprehensive management and treatment of bedwetting, a condition which reflects poor night-time bladder control in the absense of any physical abnormalities. It affects approximately 15 per cent of five year olds and can even persist into teenage and adulthood for one to two per cent of the population. Various explanations and associated treatments for bedwetting have been made in terms of emotional disturbances or the physical immaturity of the system governing bladder control. However, the approach emphasized here is based on the notion that for most children who wet the bed, this is simply a consequence of a failure to learn appropriate control of the bladder during sleep. A detailed protocol for the management of bedwetters is presented. This includes an initial medical and psychological assessment of the child, psychological preparation for treatment, demonstration of the conditioning procedure and close supervision and follow-up. Information about the availability of suitable equipment is provided. The book also contains a series of comprehensive case studies each containing details of the bedwetter's individual history and circumstances, details of treatment administered, specific problems that were encountered and the child's response to treatment. The aim of the case studies is to provide the reader with reference material for the broad spectrum of practical problems that occour in the normal clinical management of bedwetting and suggestions for overcoming these problems.
