[book itself is nice and clean, with no discernible wear of any kind; jacket shows some wear at edges and extremities, a few tiny scrape marks on front panel]. (B&W photographs) A biography of the Supreme Court justice who in 1896 was the lone dissenter in the Plessy v. Ferguson case, in which the Court's decision validated legal segregation of public facilities in the United States for another half century, until it was overturned by Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. In his dissent, Harlan predicted that this particular decision would live in infamy (he was right about that), but although he made an appeal for a "color-blind Constitution," he also let on that he didn't care much for the Chinese, and didn't have a problem with preventing them from becoming U.S. citizens. .
