He served in the US Army during World War Two, then obtained his doctorate from Harvard University in 1952 and taught history there until 1960. After a spell in the History Department of the University of Chicago, he returned to Harvard in 1965 as Professor of History and Literature. In 1978 he became William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of History and Literature at Harvard. He has served as general editor of the University of Chicago Press series "Classics of British Historical Literature". His own publications include Scotch Reviewers (1957), an edition of Carlyle´s History of Frederick the Great and (with Thomas Pinney) of Macaulay´s Selected Writings. His Macaulay: the Shaping of the Historian (1973) won the National Book Award in 1974 and the Robert Livingston Schuyler Prize of the American Historical Association in 1976.
