A fully detailed account of the background, invention, development and use of the proximity fuze, written by one of the engineers involved at the time.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. No inscriptions or marks. "No single weapon can be credited with winning a war, but some secret weapons have come close. In World War II, for the first time in history, the outcome was affected by weapons unknown at the time hostilities began. The proximity fuze has not had the kind of fanfare given to the atomic bomb, but it was used with deadly effectiveness during the war, particularly in the air defence of Britain. It played a critical role in protecting the U. S. Fleet from Japanese air attack in the Pacific. Incredibly, at the war's end, the military leaders of German and Japan were still unaware of its existence and, in fact, considered such a development impractical.".
