It occurred " not many days after." How startling, yet true and suggestive, this little touch, which begins the story of the soul's wanderings. The young heir of God enters upon his world - estate, and hardly wakes to consciousness of its possession before he wants to be away from the Giver's eye and hand. Like a dog that carries off his bone to gnaw by himself, so are we with our " portion of goods." We may belong to the race of giants, but it is of the giant who " made war upon the gods as soon as he was born." " The wicked are estranged from the womb; They go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies." Surely we must be budded upon a diseased stock, when we so early and so uniformly develop godlessness! Methinks, those words ought to be ringing in every parent's ear, ought to be written over the nursery door and over the pastor's study, and over the corner where the Sunday- school teacher sits with his class-" Not many days after." What we do must be done quickly. It is the early morning sun, that ripens the fruit and makes the garden grow. The vast increase of conversions in our day is due simply to a revived belief in the salvation of children, and the consequent adaptation of truth and teaching to the littlest minds. We cannot begin too soon. We cannot afford to wait " many days." We must anticipate the Devil. Nay, we must steal a march upon the child himself. We must put a garrison within the citadel, which will keep down the rising of his own traitorous heart. Yet there is a warrant for believing, that a large proportion of the wandering from God is to be put.
