He will find, for instance, that the nature of scent has governed the design of scent bottles: since scent is very volatile bottles were designed to be air-tight and impervious to light. And since all kinds of scent were invariably very costly, at least until the 19th century, bottles and other containers were made to be worthy of their contents.
