It tells us a great deal more about the late Victorian and Edwardian England than it does about Greece or Rome. This book is about the Victorian neo-classical movement in painting from 1860 -1914, as personified in particular by the careers of Leighton, Alma-Tadema, Poynter and G. F. Watts. All four artists were in their different ways of Olympian figures, and all those to great heights of fame, fortune and pressed the chip.
