Charles Kingsley (1819-1875), novelist and poet, eloquent clergyman and inspired campaigner for social reform, is one of the genuinely eminent and attractive Victorian figures who best deserve recognition and remembrance. The sources of his humanitarian energy and verve were a strange mixture. He was deeply influenced by the libertarian revolutions in different parts of Europe in 1848, yet he was himself a Tory as well as a Radical, and his inspiration originated not only in his personal religious beliefs but also, ultimately, from the Romantic movement and the reaction against the inhuman, predatory aspects of the previous century. After a number of years as rector of Eversley, near Reading, he became one of the founders of the Working Men's College, and the author of Westward Ho! and later of The Water Babies. Through the influence of the Prince Consort he was made Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, where his lectures were often cheered to the echo. Like many who achieve great popular success largely through their personsl eloquence and charm, be was not without his detractors. His rash attack on Newman was summarily rebuffed, and his easy rise to important academic and ecclesiastical posts inspired envy in those who had climbed less high. But with all the paradox of his character - `a mystic in theory, and an ultra-materialist in practice', as he once described himself - his immense popularity long survived him, and indeed many of his books are still in print. .
