He served with distinction in HM Diplomatic Service. In retirement he held appointments at Grindlays Bank, United Kingdom Provident Institution and at the Order of St Michael and St George. He was educated at Eton College and at the University of Oxford (Balliol), married Patricia Mary Ellerton, four children. The book includes a description of Gore-Booth´s early days at Eton and Oxford and then focuses on his diplomatic service at a pivotal time before, during and after World War II. His British Foreign Service postings at this time included Vienna (1936–37); Tokyo (1938–42); Washington (1942–45); and then post war in relation to refugees and debt recovery. He also had postings in Burma and India and was involved in the early workings of the United Nations and setting up of the OECD.
