For an all-in price of 40 ducats he provided a passage to the Holy Land with regular if scanty meals and admission to the principal holy places. His passengers were, however, advised to take their own bedding (for hire at a reasonable 3 ducats) and a good stock of ginger syrup against travel sickness. Since then the details have changed but the principle has not, and tourists and tour operators have never looked back. In this lively and unusual book Geoffrey Hindley follows them through England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, the Alps, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula and Greece.
