But then a summons to London from Admiral Sir James Cockayne radically changed all that. The admiral wanted to know about Magnusson's knowledge of certain Scandinavian languages a n d a b o u t his apprenticeship in sail. The Navy needed information about German raiders and blockade runners operating in northern waters, and one of the places to get it was the neutral port of Narvik. Magnusson was to go there in a windjamm er : t he b ar qu e ' Oulu' which, furthermore, was to sail under false colours. On arrival, he was startled to find that 'Oulu' was not the only windjammer in the northern fjord. Soon he and the crew of the old sailing ship were to play a key ro le in t he his tor ic re sc ue of British prisoners from the notorious prison-ship 'Altmark', and then to plunge into the maelstrom of the German invasion of Norway...."
