At the same time, his relationship with Esther has become more difficult and when Alice - a cousin who admires both Charles and his novel - arrives for a long visit, further tension is engendered. ***In this, his eleventh novel, Stanley Middleton has achieved an intensely live picture of a particular marriage. Seen from within and without, the equivocal nature of the situation and the swirling emotional cross-currents in the relationships of the characters are deftly controlled.
