The following chapters illustrate the state of the art in subjects as varied as molecular lanthanide clusters, the synthesis of which still relies on random self-organization (Chapter 245), low-valence organometallic compounds which were long thought to be too unstable to be isolated (Chapter 246), and lanthanide and actinide polynuclear helicates in which organic ligand strands wrap helically by self-assembly around metal centers (Chapter 247). Each chapter also discusses present and potential applications of the technique or compounds reviewed.
