The Pocket Encyclopaedia of "Orders and Decorations of Europe in Color" is a reference book of current matters relating to Orders and Decorations. As such it covers the official Orders of all European countries which may today be conferred on the countries' own citizens and also on citizens of other countries. Orders whose conferment has been discontinued, the historic Orders, and Orders of a purely national character conferred only on the countries' own citizens therefore fall outside the framework of the book. Periodical Orders, such as wartime Orders of Merit and certain specific Orders from the last World War, have however been included as far as possible. The book comprises three main sections. First there is a brief "Introduction" with a practical survey of the history of matters pertaining to Orders and Decorations, their organisation and activities. Next there is an "Atlas of Orders" comprising 80 colour plates with reproductions in 7-colour printing of the insignia of 200 current international European Orders. The third section is an "Encyclopaedia of Orders" with detailed information relating to the Orders illustrated. As an appendix to the latter, the book contains a detailed reference to certain official national British medals and decorations of honour, as well as, in a special section, the official regulations applying to the wearing of decorations.
