UK: Collins, 1975. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Chipped and stained jacket. Tight and clean book. This book tells the story of one of the oldest and most influential banking systems in the world, from its beginnings in the late 17th century, fostered by a London man of business, through the feuds and crises of the 18th century and the full maturity of the 19th century, down to the present day, facing a future of increasing demands for varied services and strenuous competition. But this is not only a history of economic development. The Scottish banking system reflects many characteristics of the people who made it - visionaries, misers, sober citizens, gamblers, noblemen, philosophers and schemers, they all play their parts throughout the story, which reads at times as grippingly as any modern drama of high finance. The illustrations give an added impact to the narrative, portraits, scenes of social life, cartoons, manuscripts, impressive architectural studies. The whole work is an outstanding contribution to Scotland's history. The Bank of Scotland was first off the mark in 1695, only a year after the bank of England. From 1746 Scotland had three chartered corporations engaged in banking with limited liability, while England had one. The relations between the three public banks and the vigorous initiatives of private bankers are of great interest: they involved bank wars, around the highly profitable practice of note issue, together with the question whether the public banks could and should enforce any sort of discipline on the private bankers and the provincial banking companies. Perhaps the greatest achievements of Scottish banking lay in the hectic years of the industrial revolution. It was part of that flowering of Scottish culture that produced Adam Smith and the Scottish moral philosophers, with literature at its peak and a new race of technical innovators, including James Watt, who so accelerated man's manipulation of his environment. Banking in Scotland was highly inventive in this phase, more so than in any other country: indeed, in the generations between 1745 and 1845, Scotland held a unique place in world banking development. £8.25 net.
