Excerpt from The Mercersburg Review, Vol. 10: Edited for the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marshall College; 1858 To find two articles on the subject Of Baptism in one num ber Of the Princeton Review, the leading organ Of Presbyte rian Theology in America, the one inquiring into the status, or real position Of grace, held by baptized children in vir tue of Baptism, and the other exposing the great sin that at least one-half, if not two-thirds, Of the children of communicant Presbyterians remain unbapnzed, is certain ly Significant. Considering the general silence and appa rent comparative indifference to SO important an aspect of the Sacrament Of Baptism, the articles, as well as the works on which they are based, indicate to us the Operation of some Special cause. This line Of discussion is not demand ed by any unusual amount Of Opposition from those who hold theories in con?ict with the Confession Of Faith. There has been no formal attack made of late upon the SA craments as administered in the Presbyterian Church. The Baptistic controversy has in a great measure subsided. It is not then from without, we think, that the discussion te ceives its impulse. The cause must be sought elsewhere. Excerpt from The Mercersburg Review, 1857, Vol. 9: Edited for the Alumni Association of Franklin and Marhsall College This assembly may be regarded as the practical fruit of that vigorous evangelical theology which, for the last twen ty or thirty years, has risen in successful opposition against the most learned and dangerous forms of infidelity. The leaders of that theology, as Tholuck, Nitzsch, Muller, Hengstenberg, Domer, Ullmann, Hofi'mann, Ebrard, Lange, etc., are also amongst the principal founders and support ers of the Kirchentag. But the war, Victoriously waged in the field of science and literature, must now be carried into the congregations and the practical life of the people. This work must be continued and completed by the rising generation of ministers trained by orthodox and pious pro fessors, by the various Church-governments, and by free associations, of which the one under consideration is by far the largest and most influential.
