Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Whitehall, or the Days of Charles the First, Vol. 1: An Historical Romance It was sunrise, on a serenely beautiful morning, A.D. 1643, when two travellers, well mounted and accoutred, halted to breathe their horses on the brow of the eminence which descends into the vale of the Cherwell. Oxford, with all its airy spires and pinnacles, its towers and domes, bosomed in forest masses of verdure, shone below in the clear morning light, like a magic city rising from a crystal sea. The landscape, hooped in by the woody hills, seemed waking as fresh and smiling from its slumbers as living beauty. Rivers sparkling, green woods waving, silvery mists floating over the meadows and vanishing in brightness, smoke curling in grey columns from hidden hamlets and scattered cottages, composed a scene of pastoral tranquillity which few would have imagined to be, as then it was, the headquarters of a devastating civil war. More accurate attention, nevertheless, discovered signs of a less peaceful nature. Sentinels paraded the lofty walls, which, in the seventeenth century, made Oxford a place of strength. Cannon pointed with their black mouths at every point of vantage; a standard floated on the summit of the castle, which dominated the town; and banderols, streaming at various distances, marked the position of numerous outposts. At the period we take up our history, this vigilance might have seemed superfluous, but for the greatness of the interests it protected. It was immediately after the formation of the siege of Gloucester, when the armies of the king were everywhere triumphant, and the shattered levies of the parliament scarcely presented front in any direction.
